Savings Tips for Back to School

Amid the groans of kids everywhere lamenting about the dwindling days of summer parents have to get back to school supplies. I hope that many of you are organized and have purchased most if not all of their supplies but for those last minutes shoppers please read below for time and money saving tips.

Make a Shopping list and set a budget
The rising cost of school supplies makes using a budget and shopping lists essential. Make sure each child has their own list and set a spending limit.

Buy in Bulk
This will help with parents who have more than one child even if they are in different grades. Try to see if they need similar supplies such as pencils and pens and buy larger quantities. You can also teach children about the importance or working together and compromise when they share supplies.

Make children use some of the summer earnings for school supplies
It?s an amazing thing. Children they will be much more frugal if they have to use their OWN money. Use this time to teach children about saving money and percentages

Check out circulars
All the business stores are trying to compete for your business and offer amazing deals on school and office supplies. Take advantage of these great savings by stocking up for the year. Many things that are cheap in August and September will go back to regular price for the remainder of the year

Shop tax-free
Some states are offering tax free savings when you buy select school supplies. Type in tax free savings and your state name to see if your state participates.

Drive through put out pile
Many towns have days leading up to labor day where people can put their unwanted items on the curb for the town pick-up.  This is good for college students that may need to pick up a desk or other piece of furniture for the dorm or apartment.

Visit the local thrift and consignment shop
I purchased a color tv with remote for a extremely small sum at my local thrift shop. While there I saw gently used microwaves and stereo systems that would be perfect for a dorm room.

Find great savings at outdoor markets
There is a wealth of outdoor markets and many of the vendors sell school supplies much cheaper than what you would find in a department store. You may be able to get many of the supplies you need for these places at huge savings without going to the store.

Free School Supplies
Some states such as California offer free supplies. Many churches also have free school giveaways for their members.

It?s important to be organized and calm while back to school shopping. If by chance you wait until last minute to shop don?t try to do it all at once. Purchase the basic essentials for the first week of class and then visit the stores the following weekend. You may find many items marked down and the store less crowded allowing you to stop stress free.

Many students that live in the Gulf Coast and were affected by the Hurricanes are in dire need of supplies. Several northern schools have adopted schools in this region and sent them supplies. Giving to others in need is an important lesson to teach children. Check with your school to see if they are participating in any drives. You can also start a school supply drive yourself with your kids. Contact your school, favorite charity or local church or synagogue for more information.
